Unknown facts about Kannada and Kannadigas

Kannada is one of the oldest surviving daily used languages across India.

@ Kadamba script which is the first Kannada script originated around 5th century. When the first available Kannada book “Kavirajamarga” was written in 850AD by Amogavarsha, English was a baby in the cradle and Hindi was not born at all.  First inscription of Kannada dates back to 450AD(Halmidi Shaasana).

@ Kannada is 99.99% perfect logically and scientifically proven.

@ Kannada script is the “Queen of World scripts” –  Shri Vinobha Bhave.

@ There are 3.8 crore people whose mother tongue is Kannada and there are 1.1 crore people whose second language is Kannada. That accounts to almost 5 crores.

@ Kannada is one of the Indian languages to feature in Wikipedia logo.

@ We are great hosts. European merchants brought these African tribes called Siddi people to Karwar district and we have been home to them from centuries. We have couple of Tibetan settlements as well, we have treated them as our own.

@ Kadambas were the first Kannada dynasty. Story of Mayurasharma becoming Mayuravarma and founding Kadamba Dynasty which ruled from Banavasi is thrilling almost fairytale like*. We are also home to Rashtrakootas, Badami Chalukyas, Hoysalas, Gangas, Vijayanagar Kings, Mysore Wodeyars etc, who were not only brave rulers, but also greatest art-lovers.

@ Immadi Pulikeshi of Badami Chalukyas, who gave Harshavardhana the lone defeat he ever received, Shri Krishnadevaraya*** of Vijayanagara in whose market people used to weigh gold and diamonds in baLLa**, BittidEva (Vishnuvardhana) of Hoysalas who built few of the greatest temples of South India, Amoghavarsha Nrupatunga of Rashtrakootas who was called “Ashoka of the South” and who had written Kavirajamarga, earliest available book in Kannada, are all Kannadigas. There are many other great rulers, we have a really great, rich history.

@ Tippu Sultan was first king to use rockets for war purposes. NASA respected that fact by having a portrait of him in one their corridors****

@ Contrary to the misconception that we did not participate in Indian Freedom struggle, we were more than active in Indian freedom struggle. One of the earliest freedom fighters, namely Rani Abbakka, Kittooru Chinnamma, SangoLLi RayaNNa all belong to KannadaNadu, who fought against foreigners much before First War of Indian Freedom Struggle.

@ Even during Gandhian movement, whole Karnataka especially Coastal areas participated in Salt movement, Quit India Movement etc.

@ Kannada has second highest number of Jnanapeeta awards. 8 Kannada authors have received the most prestigious literary award of the country which is more than any other language other than Hindi. 8***** And funny thing is for almost half of them, mother tongue is not Kannada. They have learnt, loved, mastered, wrote and lived in Kannada despite that.  That is hopefully a unknown fact.

@ The only Indian author who got maximum awards for literature is Shri Kuvempu who is a proud Kannadiga.

@ Bonus point is, S. L. Bhyrappa whom many consider one of the best novelists in India has not received it, yet.

@ Kannada is the only Indian language for which a foreigner Ferdinand Kittel wrote a Dictionary.

@ There is a taluk town in Maharashtra with the name Kannada.

@ Kannada is one of the oldest Indian languages. It is the third oldest language of World . (After . . . Sanskrit & Greek )

@ Charition mime, an ancient greek play  ( In 2nd century) had used Kannada phrases.

@ Even though today the distribution of native Kannada speaking people is predominantly only within Karnataka , there was a time in history when Kannada was spread from Kaveri to Godavari[present day Orissa]. A Madhwa saint Narahari theertharu has written many Kannada devotional songs from Kalinga region[i.e Orissa] in 13th century itself. Even though he was a native of that region and also being the administrator of Kalinga kingdom for 12 years he has written many devotional songs such as:

yanthu marulade nanenthu
hariye idu sariye
tiliko ninnologe neene
